Blindness Isn’t My Handicap

When I suddenly lost my sight, I thought the game I loved was over. But with a little heart and a large dose of ambition, I quickly learned that my golfing career had just begun. At 20 years old, with my dad as my guide, I competed in and won the 2010 World Blind Golf Championship. In 2011, I was honored as the San Diego Hall of Champions Challenged Athlete of the Year. Like all things, it’s the most difficult trials that shape who we are—and I am a better athlete and person because of this sport.

Swinging without seeing and depending on someone other than myself were no small feats, physically and mentally. I soon realized that being a blind golfer has its perks. I have a guide who subs as my “eyes” to help with alignment, track ball flight and read putts. I regularly shoot in the 70s and 80s, and I learn something new every time I step onto the course. By pursuing my passion and sticking with this game through the good days and bad, I have learned invaluable life lessons that translate over to my professional career.

As an Inspirational Speaker, I use my struggles and successes on the golf course to inspire players and non-players alike. I lead by example, showing individuals that with a positive mindset, a ton of patience and someone to help line you up every now and then, even obstacles that seem insurmountable can be opportunities for success.
